FAITH and / or WORKS ? |
|
| { in Matthew 7: 18 – 23 } | ||

|
| Paul sometimes makes it clear that by "works" he means the "works of the Law", i.e. the requirements of the Old Testament. At other times, he appears to be talking about all works, including those required by the New Testament, and those performed by others who might not believe in either Testament, but follow what their own consciences tell them that they should do or avoid doing. Let us first look at what Paul says about the "works of the Law" and compare that to what Jesus says regarding that subject. |

So also David speaks of the blessedness of those to whom God reckons righteousness apart from works: "Blessed are those whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered; blessed is the one against whom the Lord will not reckon sin." Is this blessedness, then, pronounced only on the circumcised, or also on the uncircumcised? We say, "Faith was reckoned to Abraham as righteousness." How then was it reckoned to him? Was it before or after he had been circumcised? It was not after, but before he was circumcised. He received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. The purpose was to make him the ancestor of all who believe without being circumcised (i.e. the gentiles) and who thus have righteousness reckoned to them, and likewise the ancestor of the circumcised who are not only circumcised but who also follow the example of the faith that our ancestor Abraham had before he was circumcised. For the promise that he would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or to his descendants through the law but through the righteousness of faith. If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. For the law brings wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there violation. For this reason it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants, not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham (for he is the father of all of us, as it is written, "I have made you the father of many nations") – in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist. Hoping against hope, he believed that he would become "the father of many nations," according to what was said, "So numerous shall your descendants be". He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was already as good as dead (for he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah's womb. No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, being fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. Therefore his faith "was reckoned to him as righteousness." Now the words, "it was reckoned to him," were written not for his sake alone, but for ours also. It will be reckoned to us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, who was handed over to death for our trespasses and was raised for our justification. Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God." |

While Christian Conservatives insist that there cannot be any contradiction between the teachings of Jesus and Paul (despite all evidence to the contrary), their way of dealing with the conflicts is to enthusiastically embrace and endlessly repeat Paul's teaching about "the Law and the Prophets" (above), and then quietly ignore Christ's teaching, (as you will see below). They are so much like Paul, who claimed to represent Jesus and yet hardly ever quoted the words of the Lord. According to those who follow Paul, what is most important to God is what we believe. According to those who follow JESUS, what is most important to God is what we do. Even while those who follow Paul talk a great deal about JESUS, what they believe about him is not what JESUS said about himself and what he expects of us. but what Paul said about JESUS and what Paul expects of us. |

"You have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, 'You shall not murder'; and 'whoever murders shall be liable to judgment.' But I say to you that if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be liable to judgment; and if you insult a brother or sister, you will be liable to the council; and if you say, 'You fool,' you will be liable to the hell of fire. If Jesus felt that strongly about the requirements laid down in the Hebrew Bible,
just imagine how he will treat those who play down his own requirements! (most of which are spelled out on this web site). Speaking of Isaiah, those who know the teaching of Jesus will see the great similarity of his teaching with the following from the great prophet he quoted above: |
|
I'll tell you why! because you are living in evil pleasure even while you are fasting, and you keep right on oppressing your workers. Look, what good is fasting when you keep on fighting and quarreling? This kind of fasting will never get you anywhere with me. is this what I want – this doing of penance and bowing like reeds in the wind, putting on sackcloth and covering yourselves with ashes? Is this what you call fasting? The kind of fast I want is that you stop oppressing those who work for you and treat them fairly and give them what they earn. I want you to share your food with the hungry and destitute. clothe those who are cold, and don't hide from relatives who need your help. If you do these things, God will shed his own glorious light upon you. He will heal you. Your godliness will lead you forward, goodness will be a shield before you, and the glory of the Lord will protect you from behind. Then, when you call, the Lord will answer. 'Yes, I am here,' he will quickly reply. All you need to do is to stop oppressing the weak and stop making false accusations and spreading vicious rumors! "Feed the hungry! Help those in trouble! Then your light will shine out from the darkness, and the darkness around you shall be as bright as day." |
| While claiming to be "Christians", Conservatives give lip service to Jesus,
and then ignore Jesus' teaching about Faith proven by "works", in favor of Paul's teaching about Faith without works.
Either "Christian Conservatives" don't know or don't care how much Jesus and the Gospels say about the works which God requires of us in all of the passages which we urge you to read carefully below. But, don't take our word for that. Just read what Conservatives write and listen to what they quote, and you will see that what they really believe and constantly quote is not what JESUS taught about what we must do, but what Paul taught about was what Christ did for us i.e. : |
| "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God not by works, so that no one can boast." ( Ephesians 2:8 – 9 )
"For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to Him through the death of His Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through His life!" ( Romans 5:10 ) "God . . . saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works but according to his own purpose and grace. This grace was given to us in Christ Jesus before the ages began," { II Timothy 1: 8 – 10 } " But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, He saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy, through the water of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. This Spirit he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life." { Titus 3: 4 – 7 } "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of god – not the result of works, so that no one may boast." { Ephesians 2: 8 – 9 } "So too at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace. But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works, otherwise grace would no longer be grace." { Romans 10: 5 – 6 } "For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all shall be made alive." ( I Corinthians 15:21 – 22 ) "...just as He chose us In Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before Him." ( Ephesians 1:4 ) "In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace." ( Ephesians 1:7 ) "Therefore, my brethren, you also were made to die to the Law through the body of Christ, that you might be joined to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, that we might bear fruit for God." ( Romans 7:4 ) "When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision Of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave its all our sins, having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; He took it away, nailing it to the cross." ( Colossians 2:13 ) "And such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and in the Spirit of our God." ( 1 Corinthians 6:11) "He saved us, not on the basis of deeds we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit." ( Titus 3:5 ) "But now He has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through death to present you holy In His sight, without blemish and free from accusation." ( Colossians 1:22 ) "For you have died. and your life is hidden with Christ in God." ( Colossians 3:3 ) "For all of you who were united with Christ in baptism have been clothed with Christ." ( Galatians 3:27 ) "In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation – having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God's own possession, to the praise of His glory." ( Ephesians 1:13 – 14 ) "He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him." ( 2 Corinthians 5:21 ) "For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ." ( Romans 5:17 ) "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are Justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus." ( Romans 3:23 – 24 ) "Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have , peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." ( Romans 5:1 ) "Much more, having been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him." ( Romans 5:9 ) "By God's) will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus once for all." ( Hebrews 10: 10 ) "And such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and in the Spirit of our God." ( 1 Corinthians 6:11 ) "For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, 'Abba! Father!" ( Romans 8:15 ) 'But when the fulness of time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman. born under the Law. in order that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons." ( Galatians 4:4 – 5 ) "And you were dead in your trespasses and sins ... But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ." ( Ephesians 2:1,5 ) "For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified." ( Hebrews 10: 14 ) "For in Him all the fulness of deity dwells in bodily form, and in Him you have been made complete..." ( Colossians 2:9 – 10 ) "Therefore, you are no longer a slave, but a son: and if a son, then an heir through God." ( Galatians 4:7 ) "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." ( Romans 8:1 ) "Blessed by the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ." ( Ephesians 1:3 ) "Since therefore, brethren, we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is. His flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God. let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful." ( Hebrews 10:19 – 23 ) |
As a Christian clergyman, I thought I understood what I read in the New Testament until I read the book "The Mythmaker", written by Hyam Maccoby, a Jewish Scholar a man who has a great deal to teach Christians about the Hebrew culture of Jesus of Nazareth and of Paul of Tarsus. "The Mythmaker" argues very forcefully (among many other excellent points) that
