| The chart below illustrates one of the principal reasons why the Democrats have lost so many offices to the Republican party, since their party embraced the rights of the few to be treated fairly by the many . For the 36 years after the Depression, The Democratic Party completely dominated not only Congress, but most state houses and the Supreme Court. And the public kept a Democrat in the White House for all but the eight Eisenhower years. Then came the promotion and passage of the Civil Rights & Voting bills of 1964 & 1968. And that is when everything changed, almost overnight! | |||||||

Although the effect was less dramatic in other parts of the country, it was one of the most important factors in the country going in a few short years from almost complete Democratic control of the U.S. Congress, many state legislatures, and the governorships of most states, to almost complete Republican control of most of those bodies, including some of the most Democratic of our states.. And since 1968, only Republicans and Democratic governors from the Deep South have won the presidency. |

| click here for the answer to the G.O.P.'s big lie that "More Republicans" than "Democrats" voted in favor of the historic 1964 Civil Rights Bill, (although it's nice to see that some Republicans now envy the reputation Democrats have for being the Liberal party). Why those hurt most by Republican policies vote REPUBLICAN. | |||||||

Although the Democratic Party has lost some of its past courage and idealism, although it has been moved by forces such as the "Democratic Leadership Conference" to embrace "middle class" issues, rather than the issues of the poor, the unemployed and the "working class", the Democratic Party is still the party most likely to espouse the positions recommended by the Bible, such as promoting fairer wages and better working conditions for workers, promoting the earned income tax credit for workers, promoting family leave, protecting the environment upon which all of us depend, promoting public education, protecting racial, religious and other minorities, opposing excessive reliance on military weaponry, controlling harmful industries such as the tobacco and gun industries, etc., etc.
Fiorello LaGuardia was one of the most beloved mayors to ever govern New York city. He governed the country's largest city in much the same way as F.D.R. was governing the country, in the early 30's. He once said: "This country is blessed with a rich supply of coal. It is not the invention of any one man. It is God's gift to (all) the people of America. It requires human labor to dig the coal, bring it back from the bowels of the earth so it may be used for the benefit of mankind . . . The government should (take) such actions as eventually will put the government in possession of the gift of God that surely was intended to be used for the benefit of all American people." A Liberal Democrat couldn't have said it better. Not being one to give up without trying, however, Gov. Mario Cuomo once said, "The purpose of government is to make love real in a sinful world."
